On Friday evening on the 21st August Barnard Castle travelled to Darlington to take on New Blackwell in the penultimate mens match of the season. New Blackwell sent out a stronger team to try and avenge their defeat at Barnard Castle earlier in the season.
Ryan Bond and Nigel Daniels again played as first pair but quickly found themselves in trouble losing the first set 2-6. The second set was a much tighter affair, going to a tie-break which Barnard Castle managed to edge. On the second court Jonathan Kirk partnered Scott Patrick and a solid start gave the Barnard Castle pair the first set 6-3 before New Blackwell bounced back to take the second set 3-6. This left the match 2 sets all at the turn around.
With the floodlights now on, against the first pair Jonathan and Scott struggled to make any headway, taking just one game. A more spirited effort in the second set saw them edge ahead by two games before succumbing 5-7. However on the other court Ryan and Nigel took a close first set 7-5 before taking a more comfortable set 6-2. This gave the team a more than creditable draw on the Astroturf surface that most of the team are not used to playing on.
